California License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in California?

License plate renewal in California is an annual transaction that updates your registration card and validation sticker. The actual license plate remains on the vehicle; the plate number does not change. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (California DMV) manages the cycle for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, light and commercial trucks, and most trailers.

  • Annual Cycle: Registration lasts one year for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and most trucks. Renewal updates the card and sticker for the next 12-month period.
  • Off-highway vehicles (OHV) renew on a biennial cycle, not annually. Electric vehicles registered for road use follow the standard annual cycle but have an additional road improvement fee.
  • Renewal vs. Transfer of Ownership: Renewal does not transfer ownership. Purchasing from a private party triggers a separate ownership transfer transaction; the new owner must complete this first before standard annual renewals resume.
  • Trailers registered in the Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) program pay a one-time fee and a $10 service fee every five years, completely bypassing the annual renewal cycle.

When Do You Need To Renew Your California License Plate?

The early renewal window opens 75 days before the registration expiration date (California Vehicle Code § 4601). The registration penalties page of the California DMV clearly states: no grace period exists. Penalties begin the day after the expiration date listed on your registration card.

  • Renewal Notices: Paper notices are sent approximately 90 days before expiration. Drivers who opted for the MyDMV paperless program receive electronic notification about three months before expiration.
  • The expiration date is listed on your registration card; the sticker on the plate only shows the month and year. Check the card for the exact day.
  • Late Penalty Tiers: 1-10 days after expiration: 10% of the vehicle license fee (VLF) plus 10% of the weight fee, plus a $10 registration late fee and a $10 CHP late fee. From 11 to 30 days: these percentages increase to 20%, with fixed fees of $15 each. From 31 days to one year: 60% VLF plus 60% weight fee, plus $30 registration and $30 CHP.
  • Emissions Check: Most gasoline vehicles 8 years or older must have a valid emissions inspection certificate on file before the DMV portal completes renewal, per the biennial emissions inspection requirement of the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Electric vehicles and gasoline vehicles under 8 years old are exempt from this check.

How To Renew Your License Plate in California

Before any channel works, three things must be current: valid insurance electronically filed with the DMV, a successful emissions check on file if your vehicle and county require it, and any unresolved parking tickets. Fees described in the next section add to this preparatory step.

  • Online Renewal on the California DMV vehicle registration renewal portal asks you to confirm the plate number or the last five digits of your VIN, verify insurance status, and pay. Most customers qualify; the portal blocks renewal when documents must be physically verified.
  • Phone renewal is available at 1-800-777-0133 using a credit card, debit card, or bank account.
  • In-Person Renewal: Bring the renewal notice (or plate number and last five digits of VIN) to any DMV field office or a self-service kiosk at select DMV and retail locations. The office accepts cash, checks, money orders, and cards. Kiosks print the registration card instantly if all renewal requirements are met.
  • Mail: Send the bottom portion of your renewal notice and a check or money order made out to DMV to: DMV Renewal, PO Box 942897, Sacramento, CA 94269-0001. Cash is not accepted by mail. Allow approximately two weeks for processing before the new card arrives.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in California?

The base renewal is the easy part; the VLF percentage, transportation improvement fee level, and potential late penalty together increase the final cost more than a fixed figure suggests. All figures below are taken from the California DMV registration fee chart.

  • Registration Fee: $76 for passenger vehicles and motorcycles (includes a $3 alternative fuel/technology fee), per Vehicle Code § 9250.1.
  • CHP Fee: $34, charged on all renewals per VC §§ 9250.8, 9250.13.
  • The vehicle license fee is 0.65% of the current vehicle value; this figure decreases annually over the first 11 years of vehicle renewal.
  • Transportation Improvement Fee (TIF): $33 for vehicles valued under $5,000, rising to $66 ($5,000-$24,999), $132 ($25,000-$34,999), $198 ($35,000-$59,999), or $231 ($60,000 and above).
  • Zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) model year 2020 or later pay a road improvement fee: $121, added to the total renewal amount, per VC § 9250.6. This does not apply to initial registration upon dealer purchase.
  • County and district fees vary by jurisdiction across California; the DMV renewal fee calculator returns a county-specific figure for your address.
  • The late penalty structure (from the above timing rule): from 31 days to one year after expiration adds 60% VLF plus 60% weight fee, plus $30 registration and $30 CHP late fees to the standard total renewal amount.
  • Specialty plate owners pay an annual additional plate renewal fee during registration renewal; the amount depends on the plate program and is listed in the renewal notice.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in California?

California allows online renewal for most registered vehicles, including passenger cars and motorcycles, through the California DMV vehicle registration renewal portal at dmv.ca.gov. The portal requires a credit card, debit card, or bank account; a 1.95% service fee applies to card payments. After successful online renewal, the DMV sends the registration card in about one week.

The portal will deny renewal if the vehicle insurance is not electronically filed with the DMV, if a required emissions inspection certificate is not yet on file, or if unpaid parking tickets remain. In these cases, an in-person visit to a DMV field office is necessary, where a clerk can accept supporting documents along with payment.

Mail renewal is available when online access is not an option. Send the following to DMV Renewal, PO Box 942897, Sacramento, CA 94269-0001:

  • The tear-off renewal notice slip (bottom portion of the mailed notice)
  • A check or money order made out to DMV for the full renewal amount
  • Any necessary supporting documents specified by the DMV in the notice

If California can renew your plate online, it’s the fastest route; kiosks print instantly, the portal delivers in about a week, and the office is a fallback for cases the portal cannot resolve.
